Multi-ethnic patient information

The London IDEAS Genetics Knowledge Park aims to improve access to genetic services for people from minority ethnic backgrounds. It is funding a project to develop and deliver patient information in different community languages.

Patient information translations will be made available free of charge to healthcare practitioners on this website as soon as they are available. GPs and other healthcare professionals are encouraged to view and download this information.

The project is being carried out as a collaboration between the NW Thames Regional Genetic (RGC) Centre and the Genetic Interest Group.

Funding has been provided to produce leaflets on 25 to 30 topics relevant to clinical genetics in up to 12 different languages.

Leaflets

As the leaflets we are working on become available, you will be able to download them (in English and other languages) here.

The two leaflets shown here are examples of the type of leaflet which will be available in translation in the future and which will be made freely available to NHS genetics service providers. These leaflets have been approved by clinical geneticists from the issuing department.

Disclaimer:
These leaflets are intended for issue by clinical genetics departments to their patients. The information in these leaflets should not be used for diagnosis. If you think you or your children may be at risk from a genetic disorder in your family, please discuss this with your GP first. Your GP might then refer you to a clinical genetics service. London IDEAS regrets that it cannot enter into discussion of individual cases over the internet, or provide a genetic counselling or diagnostic service.

Topics

The topics include background information about genetic services, patterns of inheritance and information on a number of specific genetic conditions. Audio versions of some leaflet/language combinations will also be produced at a later date.

A resource consisting of around 70 patient information leaflets developed by the NW Thames RGC are being used as a basis for this project. Selected leaflets are being evaluated for medical accuracy and patient friendliness. In addition, a translation protocol has been developed to ensure that the information produced is of the highest quality. Leaflet translations will be available in electronic format and published on this website.

Languages

The first 4 languages to be translated are Punjabi, Gujarati, Turkish and Arabic. Further languages are being chosen based on the needs of the Greater London population.

Further information

Although this project has a regional focus it will serve as a national resource across all regional genetics centres and beyond.
