Multi-ethnic patient information
The London IDEAS Genetics Knowledge Park aims to improve access to genetic services for people from minority ethnic backgrounds. It funded a project to develop and deliver patient information in different community languages. The project was carried out as a collaboration between the NW Thames Regional Genetic (RGC) Centre and the Genetic Interest Group.
Patient information translations are available free of charge to healthcare practitioners. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to view and download this information. The first four languages are Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu and Turkish. The second language set will be Somali (audio files), Sylheti (audio files), Arabic and Farsi.

completed. The topics include background information about genetic services,
patterns of inheritance and information on a number of specific genetic conditions.

These leaflets are intended for issue by clinical genetics departments to their patients. The information in these leaflets should not be used for diagnosis. Quality assurance
A resource consisting of over 70 patient information leaflets developed by the NW Thames Regional Genetics Centre has been used as a basis for this project. We have followed CHIQ guidelines where possible, and optimised the English to minimise ambiguities and idiomatic expressions for translation, while retaining clinical accuracy. These optimised English versions are available for download, along with the translations. We have applied a thorough quality assurance protocol including checking by clinical staff, community consultation with bilingual groups to ensure the content and the translations are culturally appropriate and accessible, and discussion with patient support groups. Third parties wishing to translate the English leaflets into further languages are encouraged to do so following the protocol published above, and to acknowledge the authors of the protocol when doing so (London IDEAS, NW Thames Regional Genetics Centre and the Genetic Interest Group). English templates complete with annotations for translators will be made available on request to those who intend to distribute their translations free of charge (please visit the GIG website for contact details). Similarly, for languages that do not have a common written form, annotated English scripts are available for translation into audio files (available for all leaflets except cancer).
