Introduction
Delivering
genetic counselling services in diverse populations raises many
medical, social and ethical issues.
Hosted
by the London IDEAS Genetics Knowledge Park and Imperial College
London on 26 September 2003, this workshop discussed
several issues, including:
- Can people from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds
get the right information, in a form they understand, sensitively
delivered and do services currently meet their needs?
- Is it ethical to discuss ethnic background during genetic counselling?
- How can we ensure that clinical genetics services are provided
in a fair and equitable way to all?
- How can recurrence risks be sensitively handled?
- What is currently done well? What can be improved upon?
The workshop
featured numerous eminent commentators on ethnicity issues.
Below you can access the abstracts and presentations given on the
day.
